Point de France border
7" x 84" This flounce is cotton, and probably a copying dating from the 1880's or 90's. Ireland at Inishmacsaint, Kenmare or New Ross are possibilities - these specialized in a heavier Gros point before and after this period. During the 80's and 90's a lighter type of lace was in fashion, although illustrated examples of such work are needed. This piece has a typical candelabra pattern with picoted hexagonal brides. But there is no obvious sculpting of the cordonnet, and the many rings are not typical of early French work. Italy is a possibility in this period of time, but comparable examples need to be discovered. The Vienna Lace School might also have been capable of such a piece. Until more clarification is obtained, it will live in the 'Point de France' category as an example of the style.
